GP Referrals

If you're unwell or have symptoms, see your GP first who will decide whether you need treatment. If you do, they will decide whether they can treat you or if you need to be referred to a specialist.

If your GP thinks you need specialist treatment and you want to pay for it privately, they can write a letter of referral to a private consultant or specialist explaining your condition and your medical history.

Your GP will only refer you to a specialist if they believe that specialist assessment or treatment is clinically necessary. If they don't think it is necessary, they do not have to refer you; privately or on the NHS.

If your GP has decided that you need a referral to see a specialist you will be referred appropriately. If you are referred through the Choose and Book system you will also be able to book your own appointment at a time that suits you. Please be aware if you do not action your referral by booking your appointment it will be cancelled after 8 weeks and you will lose the opportunity of being seen in secondary care on this occasion.
